Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better recognized under the stage name, Queen Latifah. Her work as a music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has garnered the actress the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. an officer in the police force. The couple split at the age of Latifah, then ten years aged, was 10 years old. Latifah attended Catholic school in Newark, NJ and was educated by the Baptist Church. When she was 8 Her cousin gifted her the stage name Latifah that means gentle and loving in Arabic. Latifah is a tall 5'10 girl who was part of the high school basketball team. The play she played in her high school she performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started to beatbox for Ladies Fresh. Latifah was a part of the Flavor Unit's first group, made up of a number of MCs and DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created an example of the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The song was sent to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the track. It was signed by Latifah and dropped her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
